LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS (AND WHAT TO KNOW IF YOU'RE NOT)

BY DS SHIN AND MAURICIO PENA

What do a cheerleader, chef, wrestling champion, and Navy vet have in common? They've dealt with mental illness and want everyone to know that it's OK to talk about it. We interviewed these Chicagoans about their experiences for Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 1 to 7. Get more information from Chicago's National Alliance on Mental Illness helpline, 312-563-0445, or call the Nation Suicide Prevention hotline at 800-273-8255.

AJ’S LETTER TO SANTA

DECEMBER 24, 2017 by AJ Mendez Brooks (TheAJMendez.com)

 DEAR SANTA,

Before I give you my Christmas list, I just want to get this awkwardness out of the way. You, legit, never came to my home when I was a kid. I’m just going to assume it was because we lived in walk-up apartments with no chimneys, and you knew if you tried to come through a stranger’s door in the hood you would’ve for sure been shot. That’s fair. And I’ve never taken this personally…well at times…it’s just that…ok I may have taken this extremely personally. It may or may not have become my mission in life to destroy your reputation.

Full disclosure, in the first grade, I told my best friend that the only reason you gave her presents instead of me was because her parents bribed you. The term “crooked Santa” was possibly thrown around with reckless abandon. Things got a little out of hand and before I knew it, my entire class was convinced you were a member of the mafia. I wanted to apologize for the messiness.

Around the second grade I had taken to calling you a pervert. The whole sneaking into people’s homes while they were sleeping and making sure you left evidence that you were there, never really sat right with me. Again, I’m sorry. (But, while we’re on the subject, strongly implying that people need to leave out cookies and milk to appease you while you’re trespassing on their property is basically extortion.)

Anyway, after that, I went on believing- and quite loudly vocalizing- that you were simply a manufactured fairy tale meant to scare shitty children into behaving. Jury’s still out on that one, big guy. But I will admit posting “Santa isn’t real, suckers” on Christmas morning, to the millions of children that follow me on Twitter, wasn’t exactly the nicest decision I’ve ever made.

So I guess that puts me on the Naughty list. I know anyone using that sentence over the age of 18 is normally implying something dirty, but that’s not what I’m getting at. You’re married, I’m married- we could never be. Even though, sure yeah, your insistent refusal to acknowledge my existence is right in line with the behavior of every crush I’ve ever had…I’m getting off track.

The point is, I’m probably getting coal for Christmas. But just in case you’re feeling forgiving, I’ve written up a short, completely reasonable list of requests for Christmas this year.

- Let’s get real here, Mama makes her own money and DON’T NEED NO MAN to buy her what she needs. But Christmas is about getting things you wouldn’t normally get yourself…or things that were way too heavy to carry home from Target by yourself. Or it’s about giving, or something-or-other. My point is, I’m not gonna kick a 70 inch 4K TV out of bed.

- I’m a hardcore feminist who also enjoys a dust free office. So when I told my husband I wanted a cord-free vacuum for Christmas he wasn’t sure if I was being serious or setting up an inescapable trap. I’ve gotta be honest, watching him struggle to figure out this minefield is the greatest gift I could ever ask for. But in case he gets tired of my torture, cuts his losses, and just leaves me before the 25th, it’s the Dyson with the 40-minute runtime.

- I’ve been working on several writing projects and it would be amazing if you could help me wrap up deals on them. You specialize in putting boxes under trees and not business dealings, you say? Oh, silly Santa, we both you know you break thumbs to get shit done. I have an entire first grade class who will back me up on that.

- I want every rescue dog and cat to find a warm, loving home that will provide desperately needed safety and stability. Especially the older ones. Every animal deserves to know what unconditional love feels like, at least once in their lives. What? Are you that surprised I have one altruistic bone in my body? It should be obvious by now how much I prefer animals to humans. In fact, pass this particular request over to Rudolph. I bet he secretly resents you for taking all the credit while he does all the damn work.

    P.S.-

There are some humans I do enjoy, though. And I’d appreciate if you could get a message to them. I prefer the freaks, the geeks, the island of misfit toys. The people who dread the holidays because, much like my younger self, they are met with disappointment. Some families don’t have enough money to celebrate like Hallmark cards and made for TV movies tell us we’re supposed to. Some people are alone, either by choice or by circumstance, and the “togetherness” of the holiday season can feel foreign and overwhelming. Some people struggle with depression, which can be significantly amplified by our solitude, especially during cold weather, darker days, longer nights- all while the world tells us this is supposed to be the happiest time of the year.

Tell these people I am with them. Let them know I understand because I have been in their shoes more years than I have not. Let them know that over time it gets easier. They’ll figure out how to celebrate on their own terms, eventually. And please, remind them, they are not alone. Because I am more than willing to be their creepy uncle in spirit every holiday season. Just tell them to imagine me cursing inappropriately in front of the kids and then falling asleep at the dinner table because I started drinking at 10am. Tell them they are a part of my family, whether they like it or not.

And let my wonderful weirdoes know that they have already made all of my wishes come true. Everything I work for now is to remind them, they don’t need a Santa. They don’t have to rely on anyone else to get them what they want. All the magic they need is right inside of them.

I’m just realizing you might find this offensive as hell. But quite frankly, you’ve made your shady ass, cookie crumb-filled bed and now you have to lie in it. Of course, I mean, after you hook me up with that sweet vacuum.

Happy Holidays.

Sincerely, AJ

PRESS RELEASE - “GENIUS” EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS TO DEVELOP AJ MENDEZ’S NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER “CRAZY IS MY SUPERPOWER”

DECEMBER 19, 2017 - BY TEAM AJ (TheAJMendez.com)

LOS ANGELES, December 19, 2017—EUE/Sokolow, an Emmy-nominated production company behind Nat Geo’s “Genius” franchise, and producer Jeff Fisher are bringing AJ Mendez’s New York Times Best Seller “Crazy is my Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules” to television. The bestselling book chronicles former WWE wrestler AJ Mendez’s unlikely rise to stardom after growing up in poverty and enduring years of abuse. Mendez will serve as an Executive Producer and writer on the project.

“Crazy is my Superpower” intricately details Mendez’s harrowing struggle to understand her demons and the mental illness diagnosis that helped her gain control over her life, and how she harnessed that strength to become an internationally-beloved professional wrestling superstar (known as AJ Lee). The three-time WWE champion fought against stereotypes, forced the men in her industry to view her with respect and inspired millions of fans with her fierce independent streak.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to work with this team to turn “Crazy is My Super Power” into a scripted show,” said AJ Mendez. “This is a story about the power of female strength and our incomparable ability to survive, persist and overcome. I knew that I would need partners that connected to that message, and Jeff and Sam’s bold vision was a perfect fit. I can’t wait to get started.”

“Jeff Fisher initially talked to me about this book and told me what an amazing story this woman had,” said Sam Sokolow, co-founder of EUE/Sokolow and executive producer of National Geographic’s first-ever scripted series “Genius.” “We’re so excited to get to work with AJ and tell her incredibly inspiring story.”

The book was originally released in hardcover, ebook and audiobook (narrated by Mendez) by Crown Publishing, April, 4, 2017 and will debut in paperback April, 3, 2018. Mendez is represented by literary agent Lisa Leshne at The Leshne Agency and attorney Alan Sacks at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

Recently, EUE/Sokolow produced “Genius,” with the series first season following the life of Albert Einstein with Academy Award winners Geoffrey Rush starring as Einstein and Ron Howard directing the pilot episode. Season One of “Genius” was recognized with ten 2017 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series. “Genius” has been renewed for a second season and will follow the life of artist Pablo Picasso.

Beverly Hills-based EUE/Sokolow focuses on premium television programs including dramas, limited series, comedies and documentaries.

EUE/Sokolow is repped by CAA. Jeff Fisher is repped by Gersh.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Here's what the book is about:

"From beloved WWE champion AJ Mendez Brooks comes a raw and inspirational memoir about how her greatest weakness became the very means for her success, in ring and in life. Recently retired WWE superstar AJ Brooks is a powerhouse – strong, quirky, and totally confident. But that wasn’t always the case. Growing up, AJ was a quiet girl trying to act “normal” when she felt anything but. As her family struggled with drug addiction, poverty, and mental illness, she found escape through comic books and video games, inspired by the tough and unconventional female characters. It wasn’t until she discovered the WWE that she learned superheroes could be real.
Determined to become the superhero she’d always needed, AJ trained and sacrificed for years to finally achieve her dream. Yet, she quickly faced industry pressure to play the role of the damsel in distress and dress more provocatively to cater to male fans. But she fought back and created an ass-kicking alter ego that was a genuine representation of herself: nerdy, enthusiastic, and a little bit crazy.
With humor and tremendous heart, AJ opens up for the first time about her harrowing struggle to understand her demons and gain control over her life. What most people view as a hardship, AJ embraced as inspiration for her superhero persona.

Charting her journey from a scrappy girl in an unstable home to empowered WWE champion, Crazy Is My Superpower is an unflinchingly honest and bravely confessional story about the long road to self-acceptance."

On her official site AJ shared some scoop on her book:

AJ'S DIARY 3: SILENCE INTERRUPTED - February 2, 2017

I always believed crazy was a bad word. Politically incorrect. Insensitive. Offensive. Taboo. As a child I once flippantly used it to describe my family’s battle with mental illness, and was met with scandalized stares. How could I be so casual about something so serious? What kind of wicked girl could joke about something so tragic? So I removed the word from my vocabulary. I trained myself to fear it, to be ashamed of it.

Society told me mental illness was a burden to be carried solemnly and, more important, quietly. In silence, family members tried and failed to tighten their ever-loosening screws. And in silence I stood by as the illness ravenously consumed the person I loved the most. Being quiet got us nowhere. Ignoring the problem only helped to fan its flames. And just when I began to understand what this illness was truly capable of, it came for me.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder when I was barely out of my teens. Like our olive skin tone and caterpillar eyebrows, I guess it just runs in the family.

By definition, it is a mental disorder characterized by alternating periods of mania and depression. In less scientific terms, it is a real asshole. The disorder strips a person of control. Those affected experience unexpected and unwarranted highs that can increase adrenaline, paranoia, and recklessness, and lows that induce panic attacks, relentless sobbing, and overwhelming lethargy. A person’s heart, mind, and actions either become amplified to a dangerous degree or unrecognizably distorted.

When I was diagnosed I believed my illness would be my great, lifelong weakness. Bipolar Disorder was to be my impenetrable prison, and I would be locked up with it in a castle Princess Toadstool style. Thinking there was no way out, I let it consume me. After witnessing how powerfully it had ravished those I loved, I had assumed that was my only choice. To give in. To give up. I used it as a patsy for embarrassingly bad behavior and dangerous decision-making. I let it take everything until I had almost nothing left to give. I let it be my fatal flaw.

But the interesting thing about “flaws” is that they truly are in the eye of the beholder. Weakness can turn into strength with just a simple shift of perspective. You get to choose. One day I made the choice to stop throwing myself a pity party. I chose to stand up and fight. I would embrace what society taught me to shun. What was once my shameful secret was going to become my secret weapon.

When I harnessed its seemingly uncontrollable might, I realized Bipolar disorder’s powers could be used for good. My diagnosis didn’t have to be an affliction. It could simply be the gift of extraordinary emotions. When a loved one hurt, I could feel their pain with every inch of my skin through my super human ability of empathy. When I witnessed injustice, my anger was transformed into righteous indignation, and nothing could stop me from raising my voice. My passion-fueled soul convinced me to jump into life headfirst, without overthinking. When I was scared, my super-sized heart reminded me I could be invincible. When I doubted myself, my overachieving mind made me believe I was capable of flying. And when I desired something, there was not a person on earth who could hold me back. I could walk through fire if it meant making my dreams come true.

That is the gift being bipolar gave me. It blessed me with a lofty imagination, an iron will, and an unbreakable belief in the impossible. I used my gift to take myself from being homeless to being an athlete and entertainer on international television. I became a woman with a mission.

But what good is a secret weapon if it only serves me? Now it is time to reveal my secret identity. I am Bipolar and I am proud.

And that is why I wanted to write a book. To shine a light on mental illness, to be vulnerable about the days I let it take control and paid dearly for it, and to tell anyone fighting a similar battle: You are not alone. You are not broken.

Putting my past on the pages of Crazy is My Superpower was beyond terrifying. But I promised myself I would break the tradition of silence. No mission has ever felt this personal. This book is my raw, uncomfortable truth. Each word, my blood and bone. I am so grateful to be able to tell my story.

I hope to be a resource for those fighting similar battles against mental illness. Even if your battle is a different one, my message to you is the same: Embrace your crazy, your imperfection, your weakness--whatever it may be--because it is the most special thing about you.

I have been labeled a lot of things in life; Nerdy, loud, short, stubborn, impulsive, freak, crazy- everything I was told should be my greatest insecurities, weaknesses, my biggest roadblocks- turned out to be my greatest strengths. I didn’t become successful in spite of them, I became successful because of them.

I am no longer afraid to be called crazy. Crazy is my superpower. What will yours be?

AJ's Diary 2: A LETTER TO MY TWENTIES - DECEMBER 9, 2016

My Beloved Twenties,

Soon, I will be leaving you. I am addressing this a few months ahead of time because I wanted to give you the chance to process this, and move on. I know we both thought we would last forever, but I’m going to be spending the next part of my life with someone else. My Thirties are just around the corner, politely waiting for you to go away. Don’t make it weird.

But before we say goodbye, I need you to know how much you meant to me. Even though it was pretty rocky there in the beginning. I mean, that one time we accidentally dyed our hair orange? With this olive skin tone? Come on, girl. Or how about the time when our acne was so bad it took fourteen months of severe medication and blood work to get the clear skin some bastards people just naturally have? For years we were incredibly shy, at times lonely. We found solace only in the fictional worlds of video games and sci-fi shows. We were confused, at times cripplingly insecure, and weak. We pinched pennies, barely made rent, and starved to get by. But do you want to know something? I wouldn’t trade a second of it.

Those years made me who I am. I found my value not in my looks, but in my mind, my humor, and my strong will. My imagination flourished within the beautiful, warm and welcoming realms of fantasy and fiction. They inspired me to become the superhero I wanted to see in the real world. Struggling made me truly appreciate every dollar I would earn. I learned I could get by on nothing, and endure anything. Some douchebags people may have been lucky enough to walk an easier route, but it took the winding road to teach me I could not be broken.

Twenties, you made me a survivor. Eventually making me unapologetically brave. Nothing and no one could stop me. In you, I felt nothing was impossible, no dream was too farfetched, and my body was invincible. And this body, though for quite some time pathetically scrawny, deserved respect. I learned how to take care of it and shaped it to be powerful. Discovering the hidden might of my body led to finding what was truly valuable- the strength of my voice. The more I spoke up, the more it hilariously enraged people, and the thicker my skin became. Pissing people off by telling them a truth they didn’t want to hear was so much fun! The cycle was deliciously addictive. In you, I fell in love a few times and then, unexpectedly, fell in love for real. I got married and finally had someone to share my comic books with. In you, Twenties, I used my newfound superpower of courage to create my own family, accomplish my childhood dreams, travel the world, become financially independent, provide for my loved ones, help others, and most importantly- to find myself. We really hit our stride toward the end there. But you’ve done all you can for me, and it’s time to move on to…

My Intimidating Thirties,

I understand for most, reaching you can be terrifying. As if it is an official end to being young, wild, and carefree. But truth be told, I was a boring-ass grandma from the age of twelve, so I feel like I’m gonna be a natural at this “adult” thing. I’d be lying if I said I don’t wince at the new wrinkles around my eyes, or complain about the increasing pain in my knees and neck. It’s hard realizing your body isn’t as indestructible as you once thought. But I find pride in knowing these are trophies of my Twenties. These lines are from feeling with all of my heart- crying, smiling, laughing, LIVING. And the aches in my joints are proof of my body’s sacrifice. It has pushed itself past its limits in order to live out a dream. Countless hours in the gym, countless crashes on a canvas, countless times just randomly falling over because I’m a klutz.

And even though I will never stop dressing like a prepubescent boy, I have never felt more like a true woman. I am finally comfortable in my skin. I am proud of my body. I am confident in my looks. I have learned that there is no one definition when it comes to beauty. We must define it for ourselves.

The closer I get to you, my Thirties, the less I care about anyone’s opinion of me. And that feels like the greatest gift age can give: perspective. I have never known myself more. And I have never been more proud of who that little weirdo is. I have never felt more brazenly ME. Mere days after we begin our time together, a book holding my life story will be out in the world. Another childhood dream I am grateful and honored to be capable of fulfilling. (Who gets to fulfill two in one lifetime?! This lucky bitch lady.) My mind and my words will be my weapons now. No longer will my tiny body have to bear the brunt of the work. It’s done so much for me, but now it can rest. Unless of course at some point I decide to really test its power and create a tiny human both blessed with my shiny dark hair and cursed with my giant forehead. I am a little scared of you, Thirties. But I am also tremendously excited at the promise of you. And ready for every new adventure you have in store.

I will wistfully remember you, Twenties. But please don’t be sad, I promise there are millions of Teens lined up, who can’t wait to be inside of you. (Note to self: think about rephrasing this sentence before posting.) Thank you for letting me see the world, make a lot of mistakes, take courageous leaps of faith, and for a while have abs I could do the laundry on. We got through some rough times and we survived. My skin is full of your scars. My heart is reinforced with your fight and strength. You have prepared me for this next stage of life. Goodbye Twenties.

Hello Thirties. You are the woman I’ve always wanted to be. And maybe, in one of your days, I might actually try to learn how to walk in heels.

AJ'S DIARY 1: CRAZY IS MY SUPERPOWER - SEPTEMBER 22, 2016

"I must be crazy. Why else would I write a soul-baring, life-exposing memoir after years of being painfully private? Why would I open the impenetrable gates to my little corner of the world? I am viscerally protective of it. I have guarded it like a knight and shielded it from scrutiny. My world is a remote island- a safe, warm, cozy island full of love, adventure, dogs, video games, comic books, and an inordinate amount of coffee. The idea of sharing it initially felt as traumatically vulnerable as how I assume walking stark ass nude down a busy intersection around noon-ish might. But if people are willing to listen to what I have to say then it is my responsibility to say something worthwhile. My Twitter is mostly asinine jokes that make only me laugh. And I don’t use Instagram because A) my IPhone’s camera roll is basically 5,000 pictures of dogs sleeping in funny positions and B) my cleavage is not that impressive. I’m not great at sharing my day-to-day like my breakfast, gym schedule, or selfies, but I wanted to find a way to share a part of myself that would matter. This book felt like the right way to do just that.

With this book I want to shine a light on the darkest corners of my past. I have grown from them, learned from them, and they have shaped me into the person I am today. And that person is kind of a dick, but has also lived a wild, hilarious, tragic, messy, beautiful life and has learned a lot of lessons. I’ve always told myself that the adversity in my life happened for a reason. Someday I would be able to tell my story, and if that could help even one person, then the chaos had been worth it. Writing this book was the hardest and scariest thing I have ever done. In its pages lie the worst mistake of my life, the best day of my life, a deeply personal photo album, stories of heartbreak, stories of true love, and secrets I’ve kept for far too long. I have never felt more exposed, and that’s coming from someone who has had several wardrobe malfunctions on international television. This is not a cautionary tale. This is not a memoir that will shame my mistakes and delicately guide you down a better path. This is a memoir that will unabashedly encourage you to fuck shit up. To embrace your “crazy”, your “weird”, your “weakness”- the things that others will mistake as flaws but will end up being your greatest strengths. You have all supported me through the years and accepted me as the freak and geek that I am. You have come along for the incredible journey and helped me make all of my wrestling dreams come true. And now you have given me the courage to make my dream of writing a book a reality. I hope this memoir will help you find the strength to fight for your dreams. I hope it will inspire you to find your very own superpower. And most of all I hope it will convince you to wear sensible shoes.

Full disclosure, the majority of this book was written while wearing pajamas well into the day, ingesting an ungodly amount of snack foods, and in between save points of a video game in which I slayed several dragons, so maybe the word “memoir” sounds a little too extravagant. Let’s just call this “my story”. This is my story. Welcome to my little corner of the world. "

Women Write About Comics: Oh My, Shiranui! AJ Brooks Talks Grappling, Costumes, & Video Games

November 2, 2015 by Claire Napier

R. Mika. That’s a name that has bounced around the internet since her reveal trailer, as part of the line up for Street Fighter V. The only playable woman wrestler in the Street Fighter universe, Rainbow Mika first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3 in an outfit that shows off her ample breasts and amplifies her butt-related wrestling moves. That same garish outfit—worn with far less sex appeal by a bear in Tekkenswirled at the centre of controversy, though some don’t (or won’t) see the concern.

Joshi puroresu costumes can get quite elaborate, but sexy, stylized women wrestlers isn’t a cultural phenomenon limited to Japan. North America also promotes wrestlers who are as famous for their fashion as they are for their fighting—both halves of their image come together to create the bombastic personalities that entertain us in the ring.

How do these outfits compare to R. Mika? According to US Gamer’s Nadia Oxford, these women have nothing on R. Mika.

“In fact, believe it or not, R. Mika’s representation is better than what most women wrestlers (‘Divas’) are subject to in the WWE. Though the entertainment empire’s female roster has gradually garnered greater respect and recognition in the House of McMahon, R. Mika is still miles ahead in many ways.” Street Fighter V‘s Rainbow Mika: A Force for Women in Games?

Miles ahead? We’re not entirely sure. The piece linked above focuses on Mika’s previous costume, which provided more supportive coverage. Here’s where we’re at now:

R-Mika-Street-Fighter-V

Some joshi and WWE women might have smaller breasts or lighter frames than R. Mika, but, as wrestlers, they do have one thing in common: those boobs are all reasonably well-wrangled within their flamboyant, gimmicked up, sexy costumes. During this edition of U SERIOUS, BRA? Claire and Wendy just can’t buy the practicality of fighting in an outfit like Mika’s (Her nipples seriously must be covered with adhesive. Those cups aren’t big enough! Outlook: sore). But since neither happen to be wrestlers, who are they to judge the character and costume design of woman fighters in comics, video games, and professional wrestling? Just fans, that’s all. Cough.

AJ Brooks | http://www.aj-brooks.com/

www.aj-brooks.com

But that’s why, for the precious readers of U Serious, Bra?, Claire and Wendy decided to consult a professional. Not only is three-time WWE Divas Champion AJ Brooks (a.k.a. AJ Lee) a non-compliant comic book fan, she’s also a self-professed foul-mouthed gamer. In 2012, Brooks became the first woman to win the WWE’s annual Superstar Challenge, a video game tournament which consisted of 16 wrestlers who competed in WWE ’12 at WrestleMania XXVIII Axxess, as recognized in the 2015 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.

Who better to ask about the comfort, respect, and the gimmickry of pro wrestling success than somebody who’s lived it?

As a new or casual fan, it’s hard to know how much influence a wrestler has over her ring attire. Can you fill us in any? How much leeway is there for personal aesthetic input re: normative hotness? We can imagine that it’s easy to choose a two-piece outfit for comfort or perspiration reasons, but nobody ever seems to go for a singlet! Or a full-body costume, ‘dust-style.

AJ: I purposely chose to wear a lot of things most people found visually offensive. At first, I picked lots of polka dots and plaid fabrics since it was intriguing to me to utilize something not traditionally feminine or attractive. My thought process was “let’s see if I can succeed while being as innocent as possible.”

AJ Lee WWE yellow plaid costume

I would eventually choose an outfit I felt was a second skin; Converse sneakers, jean shorts, and a cotton t-shirt. I wanted to pick something that reflected my practical style, was comfortable to move in, covered up the goods, and most importantly—was simple to cosplay. I wanted to encourage girls to dress up like me, and in order to do that, the costume had to be instantly recognizable and easily duplicated. Over the years I’ve had hundreds of young women and girls dress up like me for Halloween or at comic cons. It’s wonderfully weird.

Relating to that—what’s really important to consider, when ring attire is being designed? For comfort, for protection, for support (is underwiring worn to wrestle?) How is the dreaded nip slip avoided?

AJ: Ah, the dreaded nip slip. The ever-looming dark cloud of a compromising HDTV screen grab. Never happened to me, but I was also a wizard with double sided tape and often chose a safe bet of a neckline. The key was really to design an outfit with movement in mind.

So there are many fighting games featuring women in various states of ass-kicking undress; we’ll take a look at a few of the close combat grapplers to determine how well those costumes will hold them up in the ring. What about these costumes is good? What’s distractingly bad? And what’s bad (or good) in ways that only a pro would recognise?

Tina Armstrong, Dead or Alive

Tina Armstrong is the daughter of Bass Armstrong, the greatest wrestler who ever lived. She made her debut in Dead or Alive. She ends up bouncing around in a bikini a lot, but in the ring, she’s usually sporting variations of a southern theme.

Tina Armstrong | Dead or Alive

AJ: I once had to wrestle in a bikini on live TV (hi Dad!) and I wouldn’t wish that experience on my worst enemy. So naturally, I worry about Tina and hope she has a lot of stock in the TopStick corporation. However what I’m most concerned about here is the impracticality of fighting in the occasional cowboy boot. Girl better wrap those ankles.

Cammy White, Street Fighter

Cammy White, a.k.a. Killer Bee, is the second female character introduced into the Street Fighter series. She debuted in 1993. Kotaku just reported that for Street Fighter V, Cammy’s face has been redesigned—and redesigned again, thanks to tittybaby mewling from “fans” about how ugly she’d become. Mm, that’s nice.

Cammy and Ryu | Street Fighter | Capcom

AJ: Speaking of Street Fighter, one of my nicknames growing up was Chun-Li. Partly because I loved video games and partly because the bottom half of my body looks like it was taken from an Olympic power lifter and mad scientist style sewn onto the torso of a preteen. I adore Cammy just for being one of the original females in the series, but as a kid I always felt a little awkward seeing all that exposed booty on my TV. However, we all have to give the girl credit for never chaffing or losing that beret.

Angel, King of Fighters

The King of Fighters series features Mai Shiranui, the ninja with rocks in her breasts. But KoF 2002 also introduced (Claire’s fave) Angel, a Mexican fighter who, by her story, learnt half her moves by watching American pro-wrestling, The Rock, specifically; she has a number of reference moves. Angel’s promo art made a lot of what she’s got, while her sprite is much more reasonable with a fully zipped jacket to keep everything snug. Even if it does unzip to reveal a bandeau bra that’s probably not incredibly anchoring. But I worry, every time…wouldn’t moves like that with a gusset that slim make labial display or discomfort a real danger?

Angel | King of Fighters | SNK Playmore

AJ: If your seamstress has enough fabric for chaps, they probably have enough fabric for full coverage shorts. Just saying.

Sonya Blade, Mortal Kombat

Claire has already expressed her disdain for Mortal Kombat, but let’s have a look at Sonya Blade’s latest costume.

Sonya Blade | Mortal Kombat X | Konami

AJ: Do I lose my feminist card by saying that Mortal Kombat is my favorite fighting series, and one of my all time favorite games? [Editors’ note: No. And Wendy’s pretty fond of MK, too.] I’ve even cosplayed as Kitana and unsuccessfully attempted a Fan Lift on an episode of Raw (somewhere a glorious GIF of the moment exists). [Editors’ note: We found it!]WWE Divas Halloween

The latest installment in the MK series has Sonya playing the role of MILF while her daughter, a surprisingly covered up, strong willed female character, serves as the main hero of the story. Though I’d appreciate if the General of Earth Realm’s Special Forces and the Princess of Edenia weren’t sponsored by Frederick’s of Hollywood, and this newest heroine didn’t end every winning battle by taking a selfie, a female-led story mode is certainly progress.

Jaycee, Tekken

In Tekken, Jaycee combines pro-wrestling moves with Xin Yi Liu He Quan and Baji Quan based Chinese martial arts.

Jaycee | Tekken | Namco, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Production I.G, Bandai Namco Holdings, Eighting, Arika

AJ: Jaycee might be the most secure of the list so far because she seems to be doubling up on underwear and typing this sentence has made me sad.

Rainbow Mika, Street Fighter

And finally, the inspiration for our analysis, Rainbow Mika, Street Fighter’s first playable woman pro-wrestler.

R. Mika | Street Fighter | Capcom

AJ: Have I become so numb to scantily clad heroines in video games that the most offensive part of this outfit to me are the ruffles? She sort of reminds me of an alternate universe Harley Quinn who is slightly more damaged from paternal abandonment. Personally, I wouldn’t want to encourage my enemies to aim for anything that can be misconstrued as bull’s-eyes.

And a last question—who are some of your personal faves? Which characters, or character designs, really make you joyful? Let’s love it up!

AJ: I’ll always have my complaints about the unnecessary sexualizing of female characters in games, such as, “Why couldn’t Jill swing by her apartment in Raccoon City and grab something more sensible than a tube top and leather skirt to fight hoards of zombies?” or “Why exactly does Quiet’s action figure come with squish-able boobs?” (This is a real thing. Please Google it so we can cry together.) [Editors’ note: We Googled it. We are crying.]

But for every slightly confusing to massively depressing portrayal of our gender, there have been just as many inspiring, relatable, and generally badass female representations. Jill Valentine is actually one of the most interesting, capable, and intelligent characters in the Resident Evil series. And when Metal Gear Solid isn’t forcing boys into early puberty, it gives us wonderfully complex and strong women such as Meryl Silverburgh and The Boss. Some of my other all time favorites include Final Fantasy’s Aerith, Yuna, Lulu, and Lightning, MK’s Kitana, Metroid’s Samus, Silent Hill 3’s Heather, the newly redesigned Lara Croft, and The Last of Us’ Ellie (whom I secretly wish was real and adoptable). I also have to give myself credit for the female heroes I designed in Fable and Skyrim. Those chicks were legit and never had to live in fear of a deep v-neck.

Meryl, Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami

AJ Brooks Exclusive Collection

October 14, 2015 PAWS Chicago and Beautiful Disaster Clothing

Former WWE Divas Champion and Animal Activist AJ Brooks Partners with Beautiful Disaster Clothing to Benefit PAWS Chicago

AJ reached out to Beautiful Disaster Clothing, a long-time favorite brand of hers, to collaborate on creating an exciting clothing line to benefit PAWS Chicago.
“Beautiful Disaster represents society’s misunderstood rebels - strong, brave women and men who have overcome adversity and shout their individuality from the rooftops.
Together, PAWS Chicago and Beautiful Disaster are the perfect match!” she said. PAWS Chicago is grateful for the partnership, which will directly help save the lives of homeless pets.

“This past February, I was home healing from a surgery and was struggling to keep a positive attitude. I needed a purpose greater than throwing a daily pity party for myself,” said Brooks. “I’ve been a rescue dog mom several times and occasionally found comfort in scrolling through pictures of animals on various adoption center websites, just to fantasize about adding to the family. Then I found my guy on pawschicago.org.”
She continues, “The second I saw his face, pointy bat-like ears, soulful eyes, pronounced under bite, hilariously messy hair, with a bit of an attitude problem to boot - I knew I had found the one. I excitedly showed my husband [UFC Fighter, CM Punk] and he immediately fell in love. We both had a deep connection to this mutty misfit. A few days later the little Wolfman, we named Larry Talbot, was a member of the family and helped nurse me back to health. Our little guy has endured such a hard past but is nothing but gracious and loving. He has brought so much happiness into our home that I wanted to find a way to give back to the amazing people who took care of our furry baby before we could.”

Kaitlyn mentiones AJ in her exclusive interview with WWE

April 17, 2015 by James Wortman

"WWE.COM: Looking back, do you have any favorite matches or opponents?

KAITLYN: Actually, my favorite match was ironically when I lost my title to AJ at WWE Payback. The best matches are good because there’s emotion in them. We captured people’s attention for so long and there was so much build-up. AJ was my first match, she was my last match, and she taught me the ins and outs. Losing the title to her was this amazing, amazing moment with someone I care about and respect.

WWE.COM: Nice job steering this back to WWE! Who was your mentor during your time here, during NXT or otherwise?

KAITLYN: In the very beginning, obviously, Vickie Guerrero was my Pro during NXT, and she helped me a lot. But I will say that in the very beginning, when I was on the road after NXT, Beth Phoenix took me under her wing. She was amazing. She never had any ulterior motives, and she loved the business so much. She truly cared about what people were doing and wanted everyone to learn and get better. When I was by myself after that, it was AJ. She went from zero to 100 so fast and had learned so much. Wrestling was her passion since she was a little kid. It was great, because we were already great friends and traveling partners. So I had different mentors at different stages.

WWE.COM: Like yourself, AJ left WWE on her own terms. What are your thoughts on her departure?

KAITLYN: AJ has this weird ability to accomplish anything that she visualizes. So when she worked her way up to the top, she stayed up there. No one has been like her, and no one will ever be like her. She really just felt like she had given everything that she needed to give to this sport in general, and taught people — especially the Divas — as much as she could. She had four amazing WrestleManias, and she made such an impact that she felt like she could walk away and be content with that. I 100 percent support that. She knew the time was right, and knew that she could walk away. She left big shoes to fill, but she helped everyone around her get better. I’m proud of everything that she did."...

Being a geek-girl with kick-butt-cuteness and a fondness for Converse Chuck Taylors is alone worth a golden ticket to glory in our book, but what we admire most about AJ is her drive."

DC101: Mike Jones and WWE's AJ Lee

October 23, 2014 Mike Jones

"Sunday night it's the WWE's Hell In A Cell PPV Event and one of the matches on the card is Divas Champion AJ Lee defending her title against Paige! The champ called to talk about how long this rivalry has been going on, her thoughts on the matches in Hell In A Cell and how cool it really is to have your own action figure!

Will we ever see Divas in Hell In A Cell: "I can tell you for sure that women like myself and Paige are down for it, and I think more than capable of hanging with the guys in that kind of scenario, because we're insane and we like to jump off of stuff!" "I think if anyone could do it we could, but if it's not in my generation, it needs to happen someday, and I really think women could handle that."

On possible contenders for the Divas title after Paige: "I see so much potential in people who haven't particularly gotten that opportunity yet, like Emma and Summer and even Lana. I think they are interesting characters and women who have a lot of potential and I would love to something that's vastly different with one of those girls. Just someone we haven't seen yet get a chance."

What really made her love wrestling: "Anything with Eddie Guerrero, especially WrestleMania 20 because I was at that one. Just to see the confetti and him crying and holding the title. Anything that he was in I was drawn to. I liked having a character that wasn't 100% good or 100% evil, he just rode that line."

Sunday night, make sure to see AJ and Paige go toe to toe and all the other matches for Hell In A Cell, live on the WWE Network and on PPV."

RantSports: AJ Lee and Paige have the best rivalry in years

August 20, 2014 by Sean Meyers

"Dating back to the night after WrestleMania 30AJ Lee and Paige have engaged in one of the most compelling and entertaining WWE divas storylines in recent memory. The rivalry appeared to culminate at SummerSlam, but following more interaction between the two on Raw, it seems likely to continue for at least another month. The WWE Universe should be thankful and appreciate this as one of the best divas angles in years.

Unlike any divas feud dating back to the early 2000s, the program between AJ and Paige has contained solid in-ring action, impressive character development and a long-term approach to the storytelling.

The rivalry began in April when Paige debuted to a raucous ovation, as she interrupted a celebratory promo by AJ, who had successfully defended her championship the night prior. Paige, who already had established herself as one of the best divas in the company during her stint on NXT, scored the upset victory, capturing the Divas Championship and in the process, ended the nearly 300-day reign of AJ.

Following her defeat, AJ took a sabbatical which allowed the newly-crowned champ to move into the spotlight. Paige proved her in-ring prowess in her title defenses during this stretch, but the storylines failed to really capture the audience. That is, until AJ returned.

On June 30, amidst rumors that she may step away from the company permanently, AJ Lee returned on Raw to an incredible reaction from the WWE Universe. In an exchange that paralleled what Paige did months earlier, AJ goaded Paige to put her title on the line, and the longest-reigning Divas champion of all time managed to recapture the title.

This led to the “frienemies” angle, in which the women appeared to be cordial with each other, showing good sportsmanship, as both played the babyface role. That would quickly change, though, as Paige viciously attacked her opponent after AJ scored a victory at Battleground.

Now playing the full-fledged heel, Paige displayed her ability on the microphone and her charisma as she repeatedly mocked the champion, replicating her trademark skipping around the ring. This culminated with an encounter on Sunday at SummerSlam during which both divas displayed their athletic ability. Unfortunately, the ladies did not have much time afforded to them, but they made the most of it, putting on an entertaining contest that led to Paige capturing the title. In the process, the England native added a sexual element to the feud, kissing an unconscious AJ after the pinfall.

On Raw, AJ interrupted Paige’s match, likely setting up the two for a final match at the next pay-per-view, Night of Champions.

Regardless of what happens going forward, this has already been possibly the best divas angle since Trish Stratus and Mickie James had a feud that resulted in an unforgettable bout at WrestleMania 22.

In the current landscape of WWE, many of the divas have modeling backgrounds or appear on television as part of the reality show Total Divas. These two are different, though, as they combine their physical beauty with their unparalleled work in the ring and on the mic. Most divas storylines cannot engage the audience for a month, but this rivalry is now into its fifth month and is still fresh and entertaining.

The WWE Universe should appreciate this program and enjoy the chemistry Lee and Paige have together. It may be a very long time until two divas surpass this rivalry."

Score Atlanta: Divas Champion AJ Lee stands out in WWE

October 2, 2014 by Matt Cason

"In the long and distinguished history of World Wrestling Entertainment, the superstars of past and present always featured certain characteristics that appealed to fans. Whether it be the strong, chiseled frame of John Cena, the anti-authority persona of Stone Cold Steve Austin, or the gorgeous model-look of Stacy Keibler, the standard for who would pass as a possible big-time star always fit within a certain mold.

Enter WWE Diva’s Champion AJ Lee, a 27-year-old out of Union City, N.J. whose deep passion for professional wrestling and sports entertainment, alongside an unbreakable will, allowed her to overcome the rigors and pressures of the wrestling industry to become one of the faces of the WWE. AJ, whose real name is April Mendez, doesn’t have the stereotypical look of some of her fellow WWE Divas. She doesn’t have the tall, supermodel frame, as she stands just 5-foot-2 with “girl next door” looks, and while most women find joy in shopping and jewelry, AJ prefers science fiction, comics and video games. What separates the Diva from all other competitors is her undying love for the business of professional wrestling.

The proclaimed “Geek Goddess” attributed her love for wrestling to her older brother, who got AJ hooked while watching the wild, crazy world of professional wrestling when she grew up. That eventually motivated the then-teenage AJ to be like the Divas of that time.

“(WWE) had Lita, Trish (Stratus), Molly (Holly), and Stephanie (McMahon) at that time and they were these women who were so capable, so strong, and different. It was so inspiring for me,” said AJ.

When her brother went overseas to serve in the military, AJ continued to watch wrestling as a tribute to him, budding the love for the business and creating her aspirations to become a professional wrestler.

It was not an easy journey growing up for the future superstar. Her childhood has been previously documented of troubling times that saw her family deal with poverty that, at points, left them living in their car, while AJ worked up to three jobs just to make ends meet. When she received word of a wrestling school located less than a mile from her house, the future WWE Diva enrolled, beginning a three-year journey that would see her train and perform for independent wrestling companies across the Northeast as she looked to make her mark in the industry.

BACK TO BASICS …

A few years into her infant wrestling career, AJ came across a tryout opportunity for Florida Championship Wrestling in 2009, a developmental league for WWE at the time. She was one of more than 100 entrants and the former indy star would come out signing a contract with the sport-entertainment empire, and was assigned to FCW.

It was during her time in WWE’s developmental territory when AJ admittedly had to make the biggest adjustment.

“I just kind of got my feet wet when I was on the independents and I was in no ways skilled,” AJ chuckled. “FCW was where I really learned everything that I know now.”

She mentioned the likes of Norman Smiley and Billy Kidman among others, who helped find her personality and come out of her shell while relearning the basics of wrestling. The future Diva’s time in the developmental territory was undoubtedly rewarding as she won the FCW Divas Championship along with the title proclaiming her as the ‘Queen of FCW’.

RISE TO FAME …

In the fall of 2010, AJ debuted to the WWE Universe while taking part in the NXT ‘Rookie Challenge’ for a chance to win a spot on the main roster. The young superstar reflected on that opportunity, saying the time spent on the program was important for her career.

“I feel like if it wasn’t for NXT, I wouldn’t have been brave enough to be me,” said AJ. “There weren’t many rules in regards to what character I could portray and I took full advantage of it. I could say, ‘Hey, I’m a goofball, I like to wear (unique) shoes, I like to talk about video games, and I don’t wear a lot of makeup’ and it could have bombed but it helped make me successful.”

It would be that genuine personality that endeared her to the WWE Universe, beginning a remarkable run for the “Black Widow.”

AJ made her television debut alongside her best friend and former WWE Diva, Kaitlyn, on May 24, 2011 in an emotional moment while reflecting on the road she travelled up to that point. “It was such a long journey to get there and to debut with my best friend Kaitlyn, it was one of the happiest moments of my life,” she remarked.

Soon after her debut began a meteoric rise as she became a staple on WWE programming in 2012, working alongside the likes of WWE superstars Daniel Bryan, Kane and John Cena, among others. Her on-screen persona transformed from being the shy, innocent girlfriend of Bryan, to becoming the General Manager of Raw, to a flirtatious vixen, and most notably, the proclaimed “crazy chick” of WWE. AJ would establish herself as arguably the top Diva in the company, but she claimed it wouldn’t have been the case if not for her first role as Bryan’s girlfriend.

“We were both big underdogs and nobody really saw upside to us. We proved everyone wrong together and it was the best thing that ever happened for me,” said AJ.

Her main-event run would be capped off with a WWE Divas title, when she defeated her best friend, Kaitlyn, at the Payback pay-per-view in June of 2013 in a lengthy feud that captured the attention of the WWE Universe that the now three-time Divas Champion called a “dream scenario”.

“That (time) was so amazing. My debut was with Kaitlyn. She was my best friend and we stumbled into this rivalry, which will forever be my favorite work, and the thing that I’m most proud of,” AJ reflected. “It was kind of the (WWE) Universe’s way of rewarding me for 14 years of working for it.”

AJ now stands as the one of the main faces of WWE, as she travels around the world entertaining millions of fans. She will have the opportunity to perform at Philips Arena on Oct. 13 for a live Monday Night Raw event featuring the likes of Cena, Randy Orton, and Triple H, among others. Not too bad for a small-town girl from Union City."

Power Wrestling: PW Awards 2013

The March 2014 issue of the German Wrestling magazine "Power Wrestling" reveals the fan votings on 'Wrestler Of The Year', 'Manager Of The Year' 'Match Of The Year', 'Gimmick Of The Year' and much more.

German fans once again voted AJ Lee the Female Wrestler Of The Year.

Here is what Power Wrestling wrote:

Female Wrestler Of The Year

1. AJ Lee - 2534 points

2. Kaitlyn - 838 points

3. Natalya - 622 points

4. Gail Kim - 456 points

5. Brie Bella - 328 points

6. Paige - 266 points

7. Nikki Bella - 182 points

8. Mickie James - 160 points

9. Velvet Sky - 134 points

10. Tamina Snuka - 128 points

According to you there is only one female Wrestler clearly at the top: AJ Lee retained her no. 1 spot of the previous year. Again, her competitors couldn't even come close to her points.

Interesting side note: With Gail Kim, a TNA Knockout got into the Top 5 of this year's votings. As far as the Bellas are concerned, Daniel Bryan's wife Brie beat her sister and girlfriend of John Cena, Nikki Bella. If that's because of their private life is up for every reader to decide. We would also like to mention the up-and-coming NXT talent Paige, who has been voted on an incredible 6th place. One must not forget that more people are watching Raw & SmackDown as compared to NXT - so this are great result and sign for the British Wrestler. Many fans wish she would already wrestle in the main roster of WWE.

FOX8 - AJ Lee

AJ LEE

Height: 5'2"

From: Union City, N.J.

Signature Move: Black Widow

Career Highlights: Divas Champion; Raw General Manager; 2012 Diva of the Year

Is AJ Lee the figment of some Manga-geek’s adolescent imagination? She’s an avid video gamer, regularly thumbs through comic books and wears the scuffs on her Chuck Taylors with pride. But don’t be fooled. This unpredictable young woman is not as innocent as she looks.

Although she stands a petite, 5-foot-2, AJ is a fierce competitor with an energetic, high-flying style that poses a threat to any Diva. This bold New Jersey native first introduced herself to the WWE Universe on the third season of WWE NXT. She finished in third place, but won many WWE fans with her lucha-inspired moveset and indomitable fighting spirit.

A year after debuting on SmackDown in May 2011, AJ was pivotal in the 18-second outcome of the World Heavyweight Championship Match at WrestleMania XXVIII with a kiss to her beau, Daniel Bryan. The couple’s subsequent breakup sent AJ into an emotional tailspin, and went on to become romantically entangled with WWE’s top Superstars, including CM Punk, Kane and even John Cena.

Following a brief and controversial stint as Raw’s General Manager — a tenure marred by controversy due to her increasingly erratic behavior — AJ found herself in the arms of the brash Dolph Ziggler. Coincidentally enough, it was in the femme fatale’s home state that The Showoff “cashed in” his Money in the Bank contract on Alberto Del Rio to become the World Heavyweight Champion just one night after WrestleMania 29.

It wasn’t long before AJ claimed a championship of her own. After winning a No. 1 Contender’s Divas Battle Royal on Raw, the calculating manipulator pretended to be Kaitlyn’s “secret admirer” for weeks — a mind game that culminated on Raw just six days before their title clash at WWE Payback.

AJ beat her former friend for the Divas Championship with her punishing Black Widow submission maneuver, but she didn’t just take “The Hybrid Diva’s” title — she destroyed her emotionally. It was a disturbing reminder that there is nothing more dangerous than a woman scorned.

Not merely satisfied with vanquishing her rival, the twisted titleholder continued playing mind games. At Money in the Bank, Kaitlyn looked as though she had AJ on the ropes, but the champion locked in the Black Widow and forced her estranged friend to tap out, retaining her Divas Championship. AJ’s night was soon soured, however, as she interfered in Ziggler’s World Heavyweight Championship Match and attacked Alberto Del Rio, drawing a disqualification that killed Dolph’s chances of grabbing the title.

After Ziggler made it clear that he was done with AJ the following night, the ferocious femme fatale retaliated by slapping Ziggler across the face and beamed when Big E Langston left him laying in the middle of the ring.

Despite being ditched by Dolph, AJ’s ego remains unchallenged in WWE. The brash titleholder confronted the cast of “Total Divas” and proclaimed in no uncertain terms that none of the women on the hit reality show are qualified to share the ring with AJ Lee. She successfully defended the Divas Championship against Natalya, Naomi and Brie Bella in a Fatal 4-Way Match at Night of Champions.

Thanks to a welcome distraction by her new enforcer, Tamina Snuka, AJ Lee retained her title against Brie Bella at WWE Battleground and in a repeat performance at WWE Hell in a Cell. But at Survivor Series, AJ, and her team of six other Divas came up short against the “Total Divas” in a Traditional Elimination Tag Team Match. AJ suffered another defeat in a Survivor Series rematch the following night, leaving the Divas Champion with some yet unfinished business with the entire “Total Divas” cast. Just six nights after Natalya earned a definitive victory over Tamina live on Raw, AJ successfully defended her title against the Hart Dungeon-trained beauty at WWE TLC: Tables Ladders & Chairs on Dec. 15., thanks to the help of Tamina Snuka looming at ringside. AJ celebrated her second victory over the “Total Divas” in as many nights when she teamed with Tamina and Alicia Fox against The Bella Twins & Natalya in a Six-Diva Tag Team Match.

No matter what happens next to her or or championship, one thing remains clear: the always-unpredictable AJ Lee will always keep us guessing.

2014 Wrestlemania Reading Challenge launches

WWE, the Pearson Foundation and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) today announced the launch of the 2014 WrestleMania Reading Challenge, giving students ages 4-18 the chance to win a trip to WrestleMania 30 on Sunday, April 6, in New Orleans or have a WWE Superstar visit their school.

Watch the WrestleMania Reading Challenge video.

Beginning today through Friday, March 7, students can sign up for the WrestleMania Reading Challenge at WWEReadingSuperstar.com. Through WWE’s expanded partnership with Pearson Foundation’s digital reading initiative, We Give Books, and YALSA, children between ages 4 and 12 can select a WWE Superstar Reading Buddy and read digital books to participate, while teens ages 13 to 18 can select a WWE Superstar Pen Pal, read a book and write an essay.

WWE will make a financial contribution to We Give Books and YALSA to support literacy initiatives and provide access to books for children across the United States. WWE and its Superstars will also continue to host reading celebrations, visiting kids at local schools and libraries to stress the importance of reading. The celebrations will include special visits from the We Give Books ReadMobile. We Give Books is a digital initiative created by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation to equip families, classrooms and libraries with print and online books for children.

Additionally, WWE will utilize all of its platforms, including TV broadcasts, Live Events, digital and social media to encourage children to read at school, at home, in their local library or wherever they’re inspired to read.

“Encouraging a lifelong love of reading is at the heart of the We Give Books initiative,” said Pearson Foundation President and CEO Mark Nieker. “Through this important partnership with WWE and YALSA, we are looking to reach more children and their families this year with the message of reading, giving and sharing.”

“It’s a sobering fact that nearly 40 percent of high school graduates are not proficient in traditional literacy skills,” said YALSA President Shannon Peterson. “WWE, Pearson and YALSA can together make strides toward alleviating this societal problem and building brighter futures for our nation’s youth.”

“WWE is proud to continue its long-standing commitment to literacy initiatives through our partnership with We Give Books and YALSA,” said Stephanie McMahon, Chief Brand Officer of WWE. “Children are more digitally connected today than ever before and the WrestleMania Reading Challenge provides them with a unique opportunity to read books both online and in the library.”

Studies show that nothing is more important to a child’s overall success than reading at grade level by third grade. Developing early literacy skills sets a child up for success in school and life.

Although the duo came up short in Los Angeles, one thing is clear: AJ Lee will always keep us guessing.

AJ Lee featured on WWE Comic Book Variant Covers

October 12, 2013 by Erin (Diva Dirt)

"More details on the WWE’s first comic book, simply titled WWE, have been released. The series, written by WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley, is set to be published by PaperCutz next June.

At this week’s New York Comic Con, several variant covers for the first issue were revealed, and Divas Champion AJ Lee can be spotted on two of them.

On one, AJ Lee is seen amongst a crowd of Superstars standing behind John Cena.

In the other, AJ Lee is marveling at CM Punk. Hey, is it 2012 again? Fun fact: this cover is an homage to a classic Fantastic Four issue. AJ is playing the role of Sue Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman."

Check out both covers below:

WWE goes pink with Susan G. Komen

WWE and Susan G. Komen are expanding their joint “Rise Above Cancer” campaign to include all WWE Superstars and Divas wearing pink ring gear starting tonight on Monday Night Raw. The campaign will continue throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness month with WWE Superstars and Divas wearing customized “Rise Above Cancer” t-shirts to help raise awareness and funds for Komen. WWE will donate to Komen 20 percent of the retail sales price of all specialty “Rise Above Cancer” merchandise sold today through December 31 on WWEShop.com and at WWE live events.

Watch: Superstars support Komen

WWE will also offer co-branded bracelets and a “Rise Above Cancer” hat, headband and wristband set, inspired by WWE Superstar John Cena®, who conceived of the partnership last year and continues to be an avid spokesman for Komen.

To support Komen’s mission, WWE will utilize all its assets, including TV and pay-per-view broadcasts, live events, PSAs, in-arena, digital and social media to generate awareness and encourage fans to get involved. Throughout the month, the announcer table, entrance ramp and ring skirts will be co-branded and the middle ring rope turned pink to promote the fight against breast cancer.

“WWE Superstars and WWE Divas are providing an important public service by reaching millions of WWE fans – women and men – with breast cancer education and information, while raising funds that keep our work vital,” said Dorothy Jones, VP of Marketing.  “We’re grateful for WWE’s commitment to this cause, and to WWE fans for their enthusiastic support of Komen’s mission to end breast cancer.”

“I am proud that WWE’s partnership with Komen has expanded to include all WWE Superstars and Divas,” said WWE Superstar John Cena. “WWE’s global platforms combined with the full force of our roster will bring critical awareness for this devastating disease.”

Susan G. Komen and WWE have a history of success in raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Last year, the WWE Universe raised $1 million for Komen during its month-long breast cancer awareness campaign. In addition, WWE has supported Komen through its “Make Mom Proud” campaign as well as participation in Race for the Cure® events throughout local communities.

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research, and funds community outreach programs, public advocacy and global programs. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women in the United States. There are 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States today. For more information about Susan G. Komen, breast health or breast cancer, visit komen.org/wwe or call 1-877GOKOMEN.
